Thanks for your comments, Justin - The three educational theorists you mention are such good ones to continue to study for their work, as you indicate, can be so important to what we do. And yes, we so often forget to consider how children learn w...

Hi Beryl,

Thanks for the welcome! Yes, I surely would love working and learning from your broader experience on DRR education.

Welcome Beryl. Actually there is a lot of work that has been done in Japan along these lines with hazard mapping of communities! If you look on my blog there is a video clip that I posted called "Effective Education for DRR - It's NOT Rocket Science..." which shows very young children learning about the dangers in their community, but I also know of others across Japan as well! I hope this helps!

What I do for DRR education and how I can contribute to this site
For several years I've been training teachers and writing information about working with children after disasters. Very recently I've really gotten interested in child-led disaster risk reduction activities, particularly related to children's participation in developing school and community emergency management plans. I've been trying to find examples of such activities in the US but so far have only found work that has been done along these lines in economically developing countries. And whereas those have really been good I'd also like to know if any child-led risk reduction projects have occurred in the US. And if so what the results have been.

DRR Competencies

I'm currently working in the Philippines on various DRR projects with schools and am wondering what DRR competencies have been developed. So many DRR activities are undertaken and that's good. But what are the competencies that these projects/activities are based on? Have some been developed? If so, where would I find them? I'd love to hear from folks, especially about DRR competencies related to schools. Thanks for any help you can give me. Beryl Cheal

Get children involved and EDUCATED in drills!

So what's the point of talking about education, drills, planning in schools etc if the students don't know what is expected of them. In most drills that I have see students are relatively passive participants. I have also been running training as part of INSET to teachers and leaders at my school which included table top exercises. I had teachers take on different roles for a variety of likely situations: Lockdown, Bomb Threat and a road traffic accident outside of school. As there is a high vol… Continue
