Effective Education for Disaster Risk Reduction - Teachers Network.

The best public information film! Kids NOW love this and its almost 65 years old! An excellent resource, I used this with pretty much EVERY class I teach, reaching at least 240 students! Amazing how many remembered hygiene afterwards. Also prompted a handwashing campaign!

Yes thanks Rosanna! The clip has since been embedded into a PowerPoint presentation for schools wanting to run a simple education programme around H1N1 and general hygiene. Have a look at some of the resources on the site, under the resources tab. There are curriculum resources which have been developed and delivered. With now at least two schools following the entire curriculum, as well as literally hundreds of downloads of some of the PowerPoint presentations every month. So the message is getting through. I think using experienced teachers for this type of curriculum development is very useful. In terms of a DVD, this can be very useful if it has a collection of short films on it, such as some of those offered on this site. I tend to use clips, usually no longer that ten minutes to engage students or to help explain concepts, illustrate examples etc and this has worked well. Any longer and attention starts to wane. I have found that experiential learning where students observe, do and reflect is very powerful and have applied multiple intelligence theory when planning lessons and delivering them. I hope this helps.

Glad they love it, I know when we used it at our workshop back in December it did raise a smile. (and you attended you you will know Justin). It would be interesting to get some of your feedback on their reactions. As yu know I ran a sesion trying to capture why people remember certain things. I am going to be making a DVD for the schools project so any feedback would be great. Rosanna

DRR Competencies

I'm currently working in the Philippines on various DRR projects with schools and am wondering what DRR competencies have been developed. So many DRR activities are undertaken and that's good. But what are the competencies that these projects/activities are based on? Have some been developed? If so, where would I find them? I'd love to hear from folks, especially about DRR competencies related to schools. Thanks for any help you can give me. Beryl Cheal
