Junior Citizen 2009

The emergency planners in Hounslow have been hard at work making sure its residents are prepared for disasters. We have been teaching students from Year 6 about the disasters they face in Hounslow and how they can better prepare themselves from the most common outcome of emergencies in the borough - evacuation. Students correctly suggested that in this situation they should have a Grab Bag, so we got them to make one! Students tried to take everything from bike helmets to DVDs with them, but were quick to realise what they actually needed, and we helped them remember everything they had learn't by giving them a USB wristband (see photos) loaded with useful info. If you would like anymore info on this project, just email me!

If you guys ever do something on a weekend or holidays, let me know as I would like to observe what goes on and talk to the kids to find out what they have learned etc!

DRR Competencies

I'm currently working in the Philippines on various DRR projects with schools and am wondering what DRR competencies have been developed. So many DRR activities are undertaken and that's good. But what are the competencies that these projects/activities are based on? Have some been developed? If so, where would I find them? I'd love to hear from folks, especially about DRR competencies related to schools. Thanks for any help you can give me. Beryl Cheal

Get children involved and EDUCATED in drills!

So what's the point of talking about education, drills, planning in schools etc if the students don't know what is expected of them. In most drills that I have see students are relatively passive participants. I have also been running training as part of INSET to teachers and leaders at my school which included table top exercises. I had teachers take on different roles for a variety of likely situations: Lockdown, Bomb Threat and a road traffic accident outside of school. As there is a high vol… Continue
